  • Question 4

    4. For question #2, what did you do differently from the original post? Please outline, explain and justify what you changed & why. Essentially, what did you learn from this new topic and what did you change and why. (8 Marks)

The main thing I did differently from my original post was to add a headline. My previous post lacked a headline and had few attention-grabbing qualities. I added a headline to convey the message of the post to my audience from the beginning. Another thing I did differently was to make sure to hit every point I needed. I answered the Who, What, Where, and Why for my audience in my post. I also bolded some words and phrases. I did this to direct the reader’s attention to the most important details and to avoid making them read more than they felt was necessary. The last thing I changed was the way the post was written. My revised post was written in plain English to improve readability and shorten the length of time viewers spend reading. These changes are important and necessary because they match the behaviours of a reader in this modern day. What I have learned is that people in today’s age can’t or won’t read, therefore it is improtant to adapt content to their style of consumption and present it in a way that makes them want to read and not shy them away.

  • Question 3

    3. For question #2, explain how your new post successfully addresses the three main objectives of Plain English writing as discussed in class. Provide a detailed breakdown of each objective. (9 Marks)

     a. Describe one specific technique you used to improve readability in your revised version and explain why it is effective. (4 Marks)

     b. What was the most challenging aspect of applying the F-Pattern and Plain English writing principles? How did you overcome it? (5 Marks)

The first objective of plain writing, which my revised F-pattern introduction addressed, is speaking clearly. In my introduction, I used short words to communicate with my audience and stated exactly what my business is and what I offer. The point of this objective is to communicate the details of my business effectively so as not to confuse viewers. The next objective is writing concisely. This objective was addressed by writing short sentences and only adding necessary information. The point of this objective is to keep information to a minimum and only provide relevant information to readers. The last objective is precise writing. In my introduction, I spoke directly to my audience in a way they can understand. The point of this objective is to capture the attention of the viewers and keep them interested by speaking to them in their language.

One technique I used to improve readability for viewers is making the important information bold. By bolding certain words, I can direct the attention of the readers to certain parts of the introduction, giving them the information they need without wasting too much of their time. This is effective because it keeps the reader engaged and gets the message across without making them read more than they would like.

The most challenging aspect of applying the F-pattern in plain English writing was staying concise as well as providing enough information. Writing in plain English requires you to dumb down your text as much as possible; however, for a business introduction, you need to provide a sufficient amount of information for visitors to understand your business. Providing enough information in plain language wasn’t simple. To overcome this issue, I put keywords and phrases in bold to direct the reader’s attention to specific details that they are most likely looking for.

  • Question 2

    2. In a previous assignment, you wrote an introduction article in the “F” pattern. Based on what we discussed in class and based on the feedback provided in class, write a new introductory “content” incorporating “plain English writing for the web” in the “F” pattern including visuals. You are to include your “revised version” (if the version you submitted was not in the F-Pattern). Ensure that it addresses the three main objectives of plain English writing. As a reminder, this is an introductory post for your business. Ensure you list it in your hardcopy. (12 Marks)

  • Question 1

    1. We spoke about Plain English writing in class. Please answer the following in detail:

    a. How would you explain to someone what “Plain English writing” is? (4 Marks)

    b. What makes plain English writing different? (4 Marks)

    c. What is plain language writing for the web and in detail and in your own words, why is it important? (4 Marks)

Plain English writing is the process of simplifying text to create a clear and concise message for the viewer. The text is simplified as much as possible because viewers don’t like to read. Plain English writing makes reading easy for viewers by dumbing down sentences and using short words so as not to confuse readers. What makes plain English writing different is its focus on brevity; the writing is straightforward and designed for readers who don’t want to spend much time reading. When writing in plain language, you’re writing for a particular audience in mind, which means that you have an idea of this audience’s reading habits and capabilities. If you are aware that this audience can’t read well or won’t read a lot, plain English writing is the way to speak to them. For the web, plain English writing is the process of shortening copy on a website and using words and terminology that visitors can easily understand. If the copy on a website is hard for visitors to read or too wordy, visitors will bounce from the site. The goal of plain English writing is to give visitors as much information as possible in as few words as possible.
